an interview with Ocean’s Managing Director

Sarah Stoker
Managing Director, Ocean Consulting

You’re not from around these parts are you?
Was it that obvious? No, actually I lived in Hertfordshire & Cambridgeshire whilst growing up and moved to sunny Wokingham in 2001 as I was working in Bracknell and doing a 3 hour commute to work and three hours home and thought it was about time I moved closer!!!

Wow, that’s a lot of driving! What was your very first car?
A Renault 5 named “Reggie the Renault”!!! It cost me £350!

What did you do as your first job?
Believe it or not, after leaving school I went to college for two years to complete my BTEC National Diploma in Beauty Therapy, Leisure & Salon Management & worked as a fully fledged consultant/electrolysis technician for a year after qualifying…

That’s quite different from recruitment, what was it that altered your career
path so dramatically?
Well, loving the sales side of what I did, I decided that I really wanted a career in sales in a more office based environment, and left to pursue a role that would give me the opportunity to start carving out my career. I walked into a particular high street recruitment agency and that afternoon I had an interview with their head office and started the following week!!! Here was my introduction to the recruitment industry…

You eventually went it alone, what were your main reasons for doing so?
Well, since I left school, I have always wanted to have my own business, but had never felt completely passionate about anything specific to develop a company from.  I knew that what ever I did it had to be done properly and to the very best of my ability, as failing is just not an option!!! My experiences within the recruitment industry have been invaluable, but I have never felt completely comfortable working for someone else, being described as somewhat of a “Maverick”!  Some things never change!  My aspirations on starting Ocean Consulting were to combine the high street corporate professionalism with a smaller company feel and approach, making it much more personal and providing EVERYONE with THE VERY BEST service possible.

Isn’t that how it should be? Isn’t it about time “unrivalled service” came as standard? That’s how I feel, and I am not about to compromise!

And the name, Ocean Consulting, where was the inspiration behind that?
Well, I have always been a water baby, with the majority of my hobbies involving the Ocean (either in it or on it) and feel very passionate about it so it seemed only natural that my company reflects the place where I have drawn most of my inspiration from…

Who has been your biggest inspiration / who do you admire?
Without a doubt, Sir Richard Branson & Anita Roddick …

They are famous for seeming to achieve the impossible, what are your
lifetime goals?
I don’t feel I’ve set out to achieve the impossible, instead to achieve the achievable!  In essence I’ve always wanted my business to provide what should be expected, unrivalled service, value for money and ‘a different approach’. Too often businesses these days put money first and service second, but as a consumer myself I’ve realised how utterly frustrating this can be.  I want my business to ultimately represent a standard whereby excellent service is paramount, and capital is the reward for providing this. My brand ‘Ocean Consulting’ becoming synonymous with this is definitely one of my goals.

So where do you/would you like to be in 10 years time?
Heading up a strong, internationally recognised brand from my penthouse pad in Australia! Well, you did ask…
