Value. It is what many strive to achieve. “How do I increase the value of my business” is a question many managers and directors will be constantly asking themselves. But to conquer this task is a secondary feat, no increase in business and its success will occur without focusing first on where the real value of a business stems from, its employees.

There are many factors that can make employees feel valued, but none as effective as involving them in decision making. There is a direct correlation between how involved employees are in the decision making process and their overall morale, motivation and satisfaction with their jobs. Companies with higher levels of employee involvement consistently show employee’s have a greater sense of value.

Involving Employees in Decision Making

• Psychology: When employees are involved in decision making, they feel the company values them as a significant contributor to team successes
Result: Employees will raise their effort and commitment levels to strive for departmental and company success

• Psychology: When employees are kept well informed of any and all company changes, progress or updates, to them it shows management believes in their ability to use this information productively.
Result: Employees are able to make better day-to-day decisions that are informed and ultimately more productive.

• Psychology: Employees who believe they are involved in decision making believe they can actually make a difference. They find it easier to be motivated and feel more satisfied in their roles.
Result: When employees are able and encouraged to make decisions that impact their work, management time is freed up and can use this to contribute to the department’s development in other areas

All managers and supervisors would like everyone to think they involve their employees in the decision making of their department or team. Ask your employees the following five questions in an anonymous survey, with strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree as answer methods:

• My supervisors seeks my opinion in decision making that impacts our team/department

• My supervisor values my ideas or suggestions and puts them to use

• My supervisor allows our team to make decisions that impact our team/department

• My supervisor trusts me

• My supervisor forgives me if I make a mistake

If an employee answers the majority of these questions with ‘agree’ then you can conclude that they feel a valued member of the company. If however they answer negatively to most of these questions then they show signs of low morale and do not feel valued and that their opinions are generally regarded as irrelevant. Strongly consider then that it is these employees that not only feel a lack of value personally but are also ultimately blighting the value of the company.

Knowing your staff is key to solving this problem. An employee satisfaction survey can highlight any underlying employee unhappiness, so fish for thoughts, not new staff.
